Cultural Tips for Winter


A new year is already in full swing. Maybe you have set new year's resolutions to exercise, read a book every month or eat healthier. Or maybe you decided to stick to your old habits. Whatever is your case, we would like to inspire you in 2023 to explore and enjoy your time in Prague through culture. We present you a few cultural tips for the months of January and February.


The theater season is on, and you should not miss it. The National Theater holds several drama plays with English subtitles so they can be enjoyed by the international community as well. As an employee of Charles University, you can enjoy a 20% discount for tickets to the National Theater. Please, see the program with English subtitles for this month here.


DOX Center for Contemporary Art is a gallery located in Holešovice presenting exhibitions concerning the issues of today's world, exploring new areas of expression, or opening up a discussion. Cultural events in January:


Film Festival ÍRÁN:CI presents the best works of Iranian filmmakers that live in exile or were held in prison, and whose work has been banned. The festival is held in Prague from the 11th to the 19th of January in Kino Lucerna, Kino Světozor and Bio Oko. Scandi is a film festival that introduces the contemporary Scandinavian cinema scene. The presented movies are diverse and open up several social questions. The festival is held in Prague cinemas from the 18th to the 21st of January. For more information, please visit the official Scandi festival website.


Until the 29th of January, you can visit the exhibition Fragilités, which presents artworks of seventeen Czech and international artists reflecting on the concept of fragility. The exhibition is presented in Rudolfinum, and admission is free. Please, see more information here.


Cultural events in February:


Divadlo pod Palmovkou presents the play Nora (A doll's house) by Henrik Ibsen directed by Jan Nebeský on the 7th of February. The performance is with English subtitles. Please visit the theater's website for tickets. There is a 20% discount on the performances in this theater from the CU.


If you like the classics, you definitely shouldn't miss the ballet performance The Best of Swan Lake with the music composed by P.I. Tchaikovsky at the Hybernia Theater. Please refer to this website for the tickets.


If a theater is not your favourite, there are many cafés and bars with live music. You can have a look at jazz concerts at Jazz Dock or concerts at Rock Café. These places are always vibrant and host interesting musicians.


From the 22nd of February until 1st of March, a new theater festival Malá Iventura will take place in Prague at more than a dozen venues. Some of the performances are in English and some have no language barrier. To see the program, please visit their website.


On the 18th of February, you can enjoy Masopust feast like a local. This last feast before Easter includes all the festive activities, such as masks, parade, food, and drinks. To enjoy the atmosphere and taste some traditional feast specialities you can visit Karlínske náměstí or náměstí Jiřího z Poděbrad.
