Extending Temporary Protection for Ukrainian refugees

All the Ukrainian nationals that reside in the Czech Republic holding temporary protection are now eligible for an extension. Online registration will be open from January 30th 2023 until March 31st 2023. Please note that your temporary protection will expire without applying for the extension. By registration your temporary protection is extended until September 30th 2023.

During the registration, you will make a personal appointment at the Ministry of the Interior office (you need to visit the Ministry of the Interior personally by September 30th 2023 at the latest).

What to bring to the appointment:

1. a valid travel document (or a document for identification)

2. proof of accommodation (not required if you are staying in state-provided facilities or you applied for temporary protection after June 27th 2022, and your address has not changed).

The registration for an extension for minors under 18 is done through their legal representatives. It is necessary to prove your relationship to the minor (birth certificate or a declaration). You can find detailed information here.

After the personal appointment at the Ministry of the Interior, your temporary protection will be extended until March 31st 2024.

For more information, please visit the official website of the Minsitry of the Interior.

Information for Ukrainian employees of Charles University

In the wake of the Russian attack on Ukraine, considering the sharp deterioration of the security situation in the country, the Czech government has issued a decision allowing Ukrainian citizens to extend their stay in the Czech Republic if their residence permit is about to expire, even if normal circumstances wouldn’t allow a further extension of the permit’s validity.

If you have a valid long-term residence permit in the Czech Republic that can be extended, please contact the - we will be happy to help you with the application process.

Your family members can only come to the Czech Republic on a visa-free basis with a valid passport. All refugees from Ukraine can stay here for 90 days under the visa-free regime. However, it is important to take out travel health insurance (available online) for the duration of the visa-free stay and register with the Foreign Police within 3 days, unless the provider of your accommodation registers you instead.

The Regional Assistance Centres for Help and Assistance to Ukraine (KACPU) were established to register Ukrainian citizens coming to the Czech Republic due to the Russian aggression in Ukraine. List of the Centres and further information can be found here.

From March 22nd, 2022, so called special long-term visa for citizens of Ukraine will no longer be issued in the simplified regime. Act No. 65/2022 Coll. (the so called Lex Ukraine) has come into force and establishes temporary protection for citizens of Ukraine fleeing armed conflict from Ukraine as well as for certain other categories of persons. For temporary protection apply in person at the Regional Centres for help and Assistance to Ukraine. On this visa it is possible to travel outside the territory of the Czech Republic, but only within the Schengen area.

Along with the application, you must submit a completed form, a valid passport, if you hold it, and we recommend having your own photograph in the format 45 x 35 mm.

The temporary protection application form for manual completion is available here. The application form for temporary protection for electronic completion is available here.

If you have been granted temporary protection, you are automatically included in the public health insurance system (but only for 150 days). If a person who has been granted a visa does not have proof of health insurance yet, they can apply for it via online registration with the General Health Insurance Company of the Czech Republic (VZP) or in person at any branch of VZP ČR or other health insurance companies. All the necessary information to ensure free health care is well-described here.

To report a change of residence in the territory of the Czech Republic, as well as other changes, citizens of Ukraine can use the form below. You can send the completed form, including attachments (if there are any) by post to the address of one of the Ministry of the Interior Offices (NOT to the Regional Assistance Centre). The Ministry of the Interior offices are overloaded, please do not visit them in person regarding this matter. The form for manual completion is available here. Form for electronic completion can be found here. It is necessary to report a change of residence within 3 days.
